《焦虑的年代》是伯恩斯坦的第二首交响曲,这首作品作于1947—1948年,为英国现代派诗人奥登(Auden,1907—1973)的诗而作,原作标题为《焦虑的年代,一首巴洛克牧歌》。这是一首有钢琴独奏的交响曲,钢琴承担的是自传的角色,管弦乐队的作用类似镜子—镜子能使人在现代环境中观察自我并作自我分析。伯恩斯坦把奥登的6段诗分成两大部分。第一部分,1.楔子,4个孤独的人物,1女3男在酒吧里靠酒来排遣焦虑,并像座谈会一样讨论人的状态。2.7个时期,4个人各自以自己的观点回顾人的一生,这是一套变奏曲。3.7个阶段,以另7个变奏成为一组。4个人走上象征内心高度的旅途。4个人试尽一切办法,比如单身、交换伴... 侣,但总是迷失目标,他们从梦中醒来,更紧密地就共同体验联结成一体,成为一个有机体。第二部分:1.挽歌,4个人这时坐在车中,想到姑娘的公寓举行临睡前的酒会。他们悲悼的是失去了父亲式象征性的伟大领袖。这个乐段应用了12音列,有一个几乎是勃拉姆斯式浪漫主义的对比中段。2.假面舞会,姑娘公寓内,包括钢琴和打击乐的谐谑曲,其中也有一段古怪的爵士乐,以衬托这4个人的焦虑和迷惘。3.结束语,小号和大管分别阐述“某些纯洁的东西”,弦乐用楔子中的忧郁往事来应答。按伯恩斯坦的说法,这个结束语是主人公检验空虚之后还留下什么。
